Poems Books

Growing up, I knew very little about books of poetry. We read no poems books in school, you see, and only a few poems at all. There were a couple of works of classic poetry in the school textbook, but they were not very interesting. We picked them to death, examining every issue of meter, rhyme, structure, and metaphor. By the time we were done, it was no more interesting than an essay or a lesson in grammar. We never learned to love the language or get intoxicated by the feel of the poem. Poem books were added on as an afterthought, and not much thought was put into them at all.

As a matter of fact, I never picked up a poetry book until I got to college. This is strange to anyone who knows me. Most of my friend assume that I have been reading poems books since I was very little. You see, I have always had a very lyrical sense of language, and have a great love of literature. Nonetheless, when I was growing up, I thought I hated poetry. It was all old-fashioned, archaic, pretentious, and grandiose. None of it spoke to modern issues, or so I thought. I didn't realize how wrong I was until I picked up a few modern poems books. By then, I had missed out on years of enjoying poetry.

This is why I think it is so important for parents to teach poetry to their kids. The school system fails most of us in this department. As a result, poetry has all but died in modern culture. Instead, we have cliché pop songs and advertising slogans. Our very language is falling apart because no one loves it anymore. A good poems book teaches you to love language. Poems books, you see, aren't just about what the poems say. It is true that poetry tackles issues of love, loss, faith, and day-to-day life, but it does more than that. It it the job of poetry to use the language to give reality a feeling of imminence and importance. Good poems books help people see that every day and every moment is important. That is a lesson that too few people remember nowadays. The world is so big, and it moves so fast, that few of us bother to reflect on life as a whole anymore. Poetry can teach you to do just that.

Summary: Poems books are a treasure often overlooked in the educational system. Poems can open the heart and mind unlike most other printed media. It can make people think differently about life and relationships. The true beauty of life can be found in a good poem read on a rainy evening.
